President Donald J. Trump took aim at former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at a campaign-style rally Monday in Louisville, Kentucky.

Trump bragged to the crowd that he is among the reasons Kaepernick has yet to sign with a team. Trump cited a report last week that anonymously quoted NFL executives discussing why Kaepernick is still a free agent.

“They don’t want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump,” Trump reportedly told the crowd Monday. “Do you believe that?”

Kaepernick protested police treatment of minorities by abstaining from standing for the national anthem last season, a practice he has reportedly decided to end.

Trump said of the people of Kentucky, “They like it when people actually stand for the American flag.”

The Kaepernick topic is not new to Trump’s rhetoric.

“Maybe he should find a country that works better for him,” Trump told a radio host in August.
