SAN FRANCISCO — Stanford women were picked second, Cal fifth in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll released Wednesday at the conference’s basketball media day in San Francisco.

UCLA was picked to win the league for the second consecutive year while receiving seven first-place votes. The Cardinal tied upcoming Oregon for second place, followed by Oregon State, Cal and Arizona State.

Stanford was picked second for the third consecutive years after graduating three starting seniors on a team that went 32-6 and reached its 13th Final Four.

The Cardinal opens the season Nov. 10 at Ohio State before facing perennial power Connecticut two days later. The school is expected to be led by senior Brittany McPhee and juniors Alanna Smith and Marta Sniezek.

Coach Lindsay Gottlieb starts her sixth season at Cal with junior stars Kristine Anigwe and Asha Thomas. The Golden Bears open the season at home Nov. 10 against Saint Mary’s before traveling to UConn on Nov. 17.
