Anchor Brewing Company is expressing its Golden State Warriors fandom in the most appropriate way: A limited-edition Anchor California Lager with packaging that salutes the Oakland team’s “Strength in Numbers” motto and artwork in the requisite golden-state hues.

The lager is a quintessentially California brew, a historic style that dates back to the 19th century, when the Boca brewing company began brewing lagers in a tiny post-Gold Rush town near Truckee. Lagers require chilly temperatures — 35 to 45 degrees — for fermentation, so in the pre-refrigeration era, most California breweries made ales and porters instead. But Boca’s brewers used their town’s snowy Sierra location, complete with ice ponds and plentiful fresh water, to their advantage.

By the 1880s, the Boca brewery had 80 employees and an international reputation. At its high point, the brewery was shipping 25,000 barrels of lager around the world. A devastating fire brought it all to an end in 1896.
