CLAYTON — The Clayton Valley Charter High School has been instructed to preserve all documents, including emails and financial documents, as the county’s Office of Education conducts an extensive financial audit.

The letter addressed to Kristy Downs, governing board chair of CVCHS instructs the school to “retain and preserve all documents related to CVCHS finances, including current financial status, and current and past practices relating to CVCHS’ finances, expenditures and loans.”

The letter issued Wednesday comes a day after news broke that the charter school’s top administrators, David Linzey, the executive director, and Eileen Linzey, the chief program officer, have departed the school.

Parents and former teachers have vocally criticized the district and school in recent years over what they thought was opaque financial information and questionable spending. The district holds over $15 million in unassigned funds, which represents over 68 percent of its annual budget.

After questions over the Linzey’s departure were sent to the school district on Tuesday morning, the school’s webpage for the executive director was taken down.

Following an article over the departure of the executive director and the chief program officer, the school’s entire website was taken down.

A second letter issued on Wednesday announced an audit of CVCHS regarding hiring practices. The county office of education instructed the school preserve all documents regarding current and past hiring practices.

Eileen Linzey was hired in 2017 and reported directly to her husband, which prompted conflict-of-interest concerns from the county office of education.

The county has also expressed concern over the school’s transparency policies, particularly in denying a public records request sent by a former teacher for the contract for Assistant Superintendent Ron Leone. The school district does not have a superintendent for Leone to assist.

Leone’s contract was never approved by the governing board and was a direct hire from the executive director, David Linzey.
