UK commits to net-zero emissions by 2050

The UK is committing to the most ambitious target on greenhouse gas emissions of any major nation. Under new government proposals, Britain will pledge to reduce emissions to ‘net-zero’ by 2050, overturning a previous target of an 80% reduction by that date. Net-zero means gas emissions must stop or be offset, partly by tree planting.

Protesters surround government buildings in HK

Pro-democracy protesters are engaged in a stand-off with police in Hong Kong, surrounding key government buildings in opposition to a plan to make it easier to extradite people to mainland China. Police in riot gear have been using pepper spray to disperse them and have said they are prepared to use force to end the protests.

Labour proposals seek to block no-deal Brexit

Labour is planning to force a vote today with a motion to allow MPs to introduce legislation to outlaw a no-deal Brexit, with some of the Conservative leadership hopefuls saying they would take the UK out of the EU without any trade deal. If the cross-party motion passes it will give MPs control of the Commons timetable on 25 June.
