Student taken into custody
SALT LAKE CITY — A West High student was taken into custody Wednesday after police discovered he was carrying a gun.
No shots were fired and no injuries reported. By 1 p.m. a lockdown at West High School had been lifted.
About 9 a.m., a student witnessed what he or she believed to be another student dropping a handgun on school property, 241 N. 300 West, and pick it back up, said Salt Lake police detective Michael Ruff.
For an unknown reason, the student did not report the incident at that time. But about noon, the student told school administrators what was seen, prompting the school to go into lockdown and call police, Ruff said.
The student who allegedly had the gun was located in the school and questioned by police. He was found to have a gun on him at that time and was taken into custody, Ruff said.
The name and age of the student were not immediately available. Investigators were also still trying to determine what the student intended to do with the weapon.
Ruff said he didn’t know why there was a delay in reporting the incident, but he said police “appreciate they did report it.” He said law enforcement and school administrators are still encouraging students that if they see something, say something.
