Here’s the best way to mix the legendary mint julep for your Derby Day party this weekend

Walker Percy was a great, cosmopolitan southern novelist and essayist who died in 1990. Born in Alabama, he lived much of his life in Covington, a town near New Orleans. That’s pretty far from Kentucky and the annual Run for the Roses, which takes place on Saturday at the magnificent Churchill Downs racetrack. But the signature drink of the Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown, is the mint julep. And Walker Percy knew mint juleps. Derby Day is upon us! And with it, the mint julep. A julep is actually a pretty simple variation on the basic whiskey cocktail. We’re talking about Kentucky here, so the whiskey of… Read More

Utah Jazz miss floor general Ricky Rubio while relying heavily on Donovan Mitchell

SALT LAKE CITY — A look of frustration was displayed across the face of Donovan Mitchell during the postgame press conference in Vivint Arena on Friday night. The Utah Jazz star rookie struggled mightily in a 113-92 Game 3 loss to Houston Rockets, ending with 10 points, three assists and three turnovers on 4-for-16 shooting as a minus-31. “I’ve got to pass the ball for starters,” Mitchell said. “I’m taking terrible shots. I made a few better passes in the second half, in the third quarter, but I can’t shoot terrible shots. That’s what leads to their transition.” Houston led by as many as 38 and cruised to a 2-1… Read More

Alternative housing could mitigate decreasing affordability, advocates say

SALT LAKE CITY — With housing costs rising rapidly in the Salt Lake Valley, some advocates believe affordable solutions may lie in downsizing the way people live. A few community advocates have introduced less expensive housing that could mitigate the growing affordability concern. Salt Lake resident Jeffrey White has spent decades in the real estate business as a broker and more recently as a non-traditional homebuilder. A few years ago, he designed and constructed Sara House, located in the Glendale neighborhood in Salt Lake City, as a model for a possible alternative housing option. The dwelling was built using a discarded shipping container. The containers used are typically 20 feet… Read More

Weber State softball: Weber State earns Big Sky regular season title for third year in a row

For the third year in a row, the Weber State softball squad can claim the title of champions. With its 3-1 victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon, Weber State claimed a part of the regular season Big Sky Conference championship title. WSU and Sacramento State are co-champions for the 2018 season, with both finishing with a 14-7 record. In Saturday’s game, both teams went scoreless in the first two innings. Northern Colorado was the first team to get on the board as it got one across in the top of the third. To start off the bottom of the fifth inning, Courtney Pestka started things off with a double.… Read More

High school softball: South Sevier cruises past ALA in five innings

GRANTSVILLE, Tooele County — Sophomore Saige Okerlund hit a three-run home run as South Sevier cruised past American Leadership 12-1 in five innings in the first round of the Class 3A state softball tournament on Saturday. “It was just right down the middle and I hit it,” Okerlund said. The left fielder went 2-for-3 in the game with four RBIs. Her homer in the fourth inning was part of a four-run exclamation point that put the Rams into the second round. “We tell her, ‘Don’t even think, just go into the box and hit,’ and she’s had a few big ones for us,” South Sevier head coach Lynne Wayman said… Read More

Chipotle is going through a painful existential crisis — here’s why you should eat at its biggest Tex-Mex rival instead (CMG)

The past few years haven’t been too good for Chipotle, with E. coli scares and lackluster menu additions affecting its reputation. But there’s something better than Chipotle: Qdoba. With a more interesting menu, better pricing, and an inimitable queso, Qdoba beats Chipotle across the board. Chipotle isn’t the shining star it used to be. Its founder and CEO, Steve Ells, was officially replaced by former Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol in March. Niccol has his work cut out for him as he aims to recover Chipotle’s bruised reputation in the wake of its 2015 E.coli outbreak, and many predict big changes could be on the way. Yet in spite of… Read More

Mueller’s prosecutors dropped a telling hint about Manafort’s case to a federal judge this week

Paul Manafort, the former chairman of President Donald Trump’s campaign, is seeking the dismissal of one of the two indictments against him, which focuses on financial crimes he allegedly committed while working for the Ukrainian government. Manafort’s lawyers say that because the charges do not relate to special counsel Robert Mueller’s core mandate — investigating whether campaign officials colluded with Russia — they should be tossed out. But Mueller’s prosecutors indicated in court this week, and in previous filings, that the charges could be related to Russian collusion, after all. US District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III pulled no punches while grilling prosecutors working for the special counsel Robert Mueller… Read More

Mets formally cut Matt Harvey, recall RHP Hansel Robles

NEW YORK — Matt Harvey has been formally designated for assignment by the New York Mets, who replaced him on the pitching staff by recalling reliever Hansel Robles from Triple-A Las Vegas. The move was made Saturday before New York hosted the Colorado Rockies, just as general manager Sandy Alderson had said. Alderson announced Friday the team was cutting Harvey from its roster after the struggling former ace refused a minor league assignment. The 29-year-old right-hander, beset by injuries following a sensational start to his career, lost his spot in the rotation last month after four starts. He was demoted to the bullpen and had a 10.50 ERA in four… Read More
