Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Thursday, June 14.

Perhaps you’ve seen the film version of Once, the low-key romantic musical drama known primarily for its Oscar-winning song, Falling Slowly. It was pretty good, and so is the musical version, which opens in Vancouver on Thursday at the Granville Island Stage. And if you’re the type who doesn’t generally enjoy when believable characters suddenly burst, unbelievably, into song, this one is for you. The actors are playing musicians, and they’re also playing their own instruments onstage. It’s great.

Where: Granville Island Stage, 1585 Johnston St., Vancouver
When: 7:30 p.m.

Festival d’été francophone de Vancouver (Vancouver Francophone Summer Festival): Étienne Fletcher and Loig Morin

You know what’s cool, is Francophone music. I only understand very few words because I didn’t pay attention in school, but I’ve always been a sucker for music with unintelligible lyrics, so it still works for me. The Vancouver Francophone Summer Festival is a week of local concerts under the banner of international francophone music. It’s all good, you should go.

The festival opens Thursday with Étienne Fletcher and Loig Morin, two singer-songwriters who dabble in Francophone rock, folk, blues and pop.

Where: Studio 16, 1555 West 7th Ave., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
Cost: $20

PETA president: We Are All Animals international speaking tour

I don’t often recommend speaking tours, since hearing unfunny people talk rarely appeals to me. But PETA president and founder Ingrid Newkirk’s new tour intrigues me. Newkirk explores the common links that bind various forms of discrimination and the state of the animal kingdom, which is interesting. Plus: vegan treats and beverages! You may roll your eyes, but have you seen the things vegans can do with cashews? It’ll blow your mind.
