Last week’s Bitcoin 2021 Conference in Miami billed itself as the world’s largest bitcoin event, with over 12,000 attendees. Now several prominent crypto influencers are saying they contracted Covid-19 after going to the conference.

“Looks like I’m joining the BTC Miami Covid list. It turns out that attending packed events to discuss number-go-up technology ideas does increase the chance of getting sick,” Luke Martin, host of the Profit Maximalist podcast tweeted. The tweet was later removed.

The Bitcoin 2021 Conference organizers wrote to Insider in an emailed statement that all attendees were provided with the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Florida recommendations. The organizers also wrote that they expressed to their “audience that those who were high risk or hadn’t been vaccinated should consider waiting until next year.” 

The CDC recently updated its guidelines for US residents, saying those who are fully vaccinated can go maskless in most settings. It still recommended that unvaccinated people wear masks and continue social distancing. 

Other crypto influencers who tweeted claiming to have contracted Covid-19 following the Miami conference include Eric Wall, the chief investment officer at Arcane Assets, and the popular crypto analyst who goes by Kaleo and has nearly 319,000 Twitter followers. Both Wall and Kaleo wrote that they were not vaccinated.

Martin, Wall and Kaleo could not be reached for comment. 

Another influencer, Larry Cermak, who works at the digital asset research foundation The Block, tweeted that “everyone who I hung out with in Miami got Covid.” But wrote that he has …read more
