Newsom nominates first Latina state Supreme Court chief justice

Associated Press SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has nominated current state Supreme Court Associate Justice Patricia Guerrero as the next chief justice. Guerrero, the court’s first Latina judge, has been on the state Supreme Court since March as an associate justice. She would replace Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who will step down once her term ends in January. “Justice Guerrero has established herself as a widely respected jurist with a formidable intellect and command of the law and deep commitment to equal justice and public service,” Newsom said in a news release announcing Guerrero’s nomination. ‘Magnum, P.I.’ star Roger E. Mosley dies at 83 after car crash

Mosley, best known for his role as the helicopter pilot Theodore “TC” Calvin on the 1980s hit show “Magnum, P.I.,” died Sunday, his daughter announced. He was 83. Oakland man arrested following one-acre East Bay fire that threatened homes

ANTIOCH — Fire investigators arrested an Oakland resident on suspicion of arson following a two-alarm vegetation fire that charred an acre Monday and came dangerously close to homes, fire officials said. The 37-year-old was spotted by a witness who photographed him as he fled the area, according to Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill.
